Italian retreat from Benghazi

On the 5th of February 1941 the Australin 6th Division and the British 7th Armoured Division ambushed the retreating Italians near Sidi Saleh, East of Benghazi.

Just thirty minutes after the ambush was set up the leading elements of the Italian 10th Army arrived. Next day the Italians attacked to break through and continued their attacks into 7 February. With British reinforcements arriving and the Australians pressing down the road from Benghazi, the 10th Army surrendered with 25,000 men, 107 tanks and 93 guns.

A few blog ago I regailed you with the sad tale of some resin Italian vehicles that were so badly molded that I decide to make some battlefield detritus out of them. This is the result:

I am happy with how something that was destined for the rubbish bin now has multiple uses as terrain, objective markers and replacements for destroyed vehicles.

  1. Roger I have a very simple technique. Undercoat sprayTamiya TS3. If additional camo or colour such as the olive drab for the British, then lightly spray this colour. Pick out highlights such as tyres, tracks etc., but if you take a close look no other details are done. This is because for a tabletop gaming model people do not notice. Liberally apply GW Agrax Earthshade ink, and then drybrush highlight, generally white, but on this occasion it was a light sandy colour. The longest bit is waiting for the various stages to dry.

For those models I really like or I want to stand out I use a more traditional aspproach building up layers of shade and highlight but this takes about ten times longer so I save it for those special models like the cats and dogs I did recently.

I have a blog that details my method:
