The Battle of Mur Toldur

Having defeated the “smelly green things” and taken back his ancestral home in his last great battle, Gralmarlun Barrelborn went in search of Runestones to decorate their great halls, and to bring them back to their former glory. Not far away was the small village of Mur Toldur.

Nestled in a narrow valley between two mountain ranges the village was famous for its abundance of Runestones. Unfortunately the green smelly things also like bright shiny baubles!

Aware of the presence of “green smelly things” in the valley Gralmarlun took a substantial force with him to collect the runestones.

Muzzer Merrystone

Muzzer is renowned across the Dwarf kingdoms for his culinary expertise. He is definitely Michelin three star quality as everything he cooks tastes like rubber.

Rather than being considered “the club handicap” Bucko has quickly become a sought after (but never a sort) gaming partner. It seems that while fantasy gaming he has the luck of the Irish. So this time he changed from being a vertically challenged individual into a “green smelly thing” – quite fitting really.

Again we were playing Dragon Rampart this time using the “Crystal Gale” scenario. Eight Runestones were placed around the table worth one victory point each. As soon as a unit touches one of the runestone the stones are magically transported back to your kingdom – such is the power of runestones.

The Dwarfs were attacking and chose the “They will tremble before me” quest where two of the “green smelly things” units need to be battered at the same time. The “green smelly things” warboss chose the “Avenge the Fallen” where they secretly choose one Dwarf unit that they must destroy or rout. They chose the Troll Slayers unit of Muzzer Merrystone. The Dwarf community were hoping they might be successful!

The Wolf riders “steal” a Dwarf runestone.

The Boar Boyz ride through the village to attack Muzzer Merrystones Troll Slayers which they deal with very easily.

Muzzer tried desperately to rally his Slayers but with a double one on their Courage Test they ended on a minus result and were routed on contact. As a result the “green smelly things” achieved their Quest.

The Boar Boyz “steal” another runestone.

Halmaek Onyxrock’s Giant Bat Riders rescue another runestone from being looted by the “green smelly things”.

On their left flank the Orc Boyz “steal” the “green smelly things” fourth runestone.

The Dwarfs move forward led by Wetdrolkin Kegbelly

The black orcs are repulsed by Fornubella Honormail and her clansmen.

Fornubella was then able to secure two more runestones to give the Dwarfs one last chance at salvaging a draw.

The Boar Boyz are repulsed by Gralmarlun and his boar riders, and fail their subsequent Courage Test but only by enough to become Battered despite only have one strength point left. It was now time for the Apprentice Runesmith Wetdrolkin Kegbelly to step up. With the Boar Boz left in a Battered state Kegbelly needed to succeed with his “Befuddle Thee” spell to Batter a second unit to achieve the Dwarf’s Quest.

The Stone Trolls were targetted and all he needed to roll was a seven!

I guess you shouldn’t rely on an apprentice should you!!!

The Dwarfs in control of the battlefield at games end.

With all runestones now collected the scenario ended. With each side having transported four runestones back to their kingdom each had four victory points. With the “green smelly things” having achieved thier quest they gained a further two points winning the game – the “BFF” (Bucko Fantasy Factor) strikes again. Another Birthday Bash down the gurgler for the author.

The army of “green smelly things” was teetering on the edge with three units below half strength points, but as unit losses did not count for victory points this did not matter.

Having only lost one unit and with just one other with strength points lost, the Dwarfs were in control of the battlefield. This enabled them to mine more runestones at will thus achieving their goal of restoring the former glory of Gralmarlun’s ancestral home (the pen is mightier than the sword!!).

Sorry for the delay on writing this Battle Report up but I had troubling finding the file with all of the pics in. Definitely not a seniors moment because at my age I am quite a young Dwarf.

Some gaming aids PIGS have created for Dragon Rampart you might be able to use.

Just change the picture and the stats to suit your own army list.

We place these on the unit card to keep a track on what upgrades each unit has.

The spell cards are useful for minor wizards who only have limited spells as the spells they have chosenm can be placed on their unit card for easy reference.

Each leader is dealt a card from the pack and placed on the leader unit card. This makes it easy to remember what trait they have and also prevents having duplicate traits caused by dicing.

We plan to make “Quest” cards to make this easier as well but it all takes time.

ENJOY

  1. It was great fun they are a very simple set of rules designed to enjoy yourself and not treat to seriously. The trolls do look great they are one of the other PIGS Nick’s figures that he has painted well and caught their quirkiness. We will no doubt continue the Saga of Gralmarlun in future blogs Covid 19 lockdowns permitting.
