Beasts of War

I have finally finished my 20mm African animals. These are “very expensive” plastic toys that I have scrounged from packets over the years. Being a Great Grandpa is awesome as you can buy the chillblains a packet of animals pick out what you want, give them the rest and they think its great!!!!

The models aren’t great, but hey they do the job.

This guys a monster in terms of scale but he cost a pittance so who cares!

Hippos swimming and on land.

Struggled with the “camo” pattern on these and this result is after I finally gave up following about five attempts.

I had previously finished the nasty “big cats” a few years ago.

Why in the hell do you want 20mm plastic toys?

Well I have a large collection (mostly unpainted but I am getting there) of WW1 troops for Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck’s East Africa campaign.

If you are going to fight the battles of this campaign the animals are needed for more than just scenery.

There are several battles where big cats, in one case leopards and in another lions, were searching for stragglers and a meal in “no-mans-land”.

At the battle of the Rufiji River Crossing the British had to contend with hippos overturning their boats and the crocodiles causing mayhem when they did. The Hippos also destroyed part of the British camp by charging through it! I can see a scenario happening but need more hippos!

Also, during the battle of Tanga the British had to deal with not only well sighted German machine guns but attacks from wild bees!

So that’s why!!!

  1. One of the great things when the kids were little was being able to peruse the toyshops and buy stuff I (sorry they) wanted, like Dinosaurs, soldiers, robots, cars (well you get the idea! 😁).

Look great, by the way, cheers Roger.

  2. Gamers are nothing if not obsessive. The answer is of course yes! I have some large German WW1 siege guns on large metal wheels that will do for the 4″ guns and I am going to use the Colonial HaT plastic British landing party for the sailors – not quite right but close enough.
