Skirmish of the advance guards outside Stromthal – Lasalle 2 Battle Report

I chose to use the first scenario in the rule book as it allowed me to use the Brunswick forces I had just painted and based.

The Brunswick contingent with the addition of a ADC from the advanced rules totaled 202 points and the French force 212. The additional French Battery proved decisive in the end.

Rather than a strict battle report this is more of a narrative with units moving, shooting and charging at each other being treated as a single contiguous event rather than following the strict momentum sequence played out by the rules.

The French Hussars formed a March column in order to be able to march across the bridge and seize the objective.

The Brunswick Lancers seized the opportunity and charged them in the flank and destroyed them.

They were promptly charged in the flank by the French 7th Hussars and dispersed themselves.

We are still learning to be able to protect our flanks during an attack to avoid this happening. If the 7h Hussars had been originally protecting the left flank of the French cavalry column the Brunswick lancers would not been able to charge and the French would have been able to seize the objective.

The Brunswick forces around the bridge would have then needed to form march column themselves to charge across the bridge, allowing the French to bring up supports to reinforce their position.

The Danish Schlesling Regiment advanced across the river but were shaken by shooting from the Brunswick foot artillery and the Leib Battalion. The Leib Battalion promptly charged and destroyed the Danes.

Opposite the town of Stromthal the 58th Light Wurtemburg Regiment advanced and was shot to pieces by the Brunswick 2nd Light Battalion and broke when they were successfully charged.

The Leib Battalion crossed the river and shot and charged the Wurzburg regiment that had been severely weakened by artillery “bounce through” fire.

The Brunswick 2nd Light battalion then moved forward to attack the French guns on the hill and with appalling luck (needing to roll anything but a one) they were repulsed right in front of the guns.

Shredded by grape shot and the shooting from the 1st Battalion of the 1st Light Regiment those remaining scampered back to safety.

The Brunswick 1st Light Battalion deployed in the town to garrison Stomthal and seize the first objective.

Although exhausted from destroying two allied french regiments, the Lieb battalion again advance, but this time on the elite 1st Battalion of the 1st Light Regiment. The withering fire shattered them and they fled the field.

At this moment both sides were teetering with the French having lost four units and the Brunswick contingent three. This meant that one more loss would cause either army to reach one third losses, causing them to retire from the field.

Seizing this opportunity and with the French 1st Battalion of the 1st Line Regiment caught in line the Brunswick Hussars charged. Again abysmal luck caused them to fail to destroy the infantry despite them being caught in the open.

The Brunswick battalion seized the hamlet of Niederkreuz and the second objective.

Alas this was to be of no avail as with cannons to the left of them, and cannons to the right of them, and infantry all around, the Brunswick Hussars were cut to pieces causing the Brunswick contingent to leave the field.

We are all still learning the rules but are very happy with how they are going at the moment. I am glad to just be able to get some 28mm Napoleonic figures out again.

    • Sure is. I am using the Christmas and New Year break to get in as many games as I can.

Looking forward to a game of Song of Ice and Fire on Tuesday, and a mega game on Saturday that we have each year as a memorial to a great mate Mick who passed away at quite a young age.

  1. Thanks Pete we had a great time. More for the excuse to talk s%@t and drink wine (substitute your favourite strong liquor here) with your mates. I often think the game is coincidental, especially after a few!
