Works in Progress…..

With our wedding anniversary yesterday I haven’t finished anything but have had a chance to do a bit more on some projects.

First I have made a start on my small container ship.

The b ridge internal detail.

The red will make a nice contrast to the sea mat I use.

I also wanted to demonstrate the two techniques I use to represent wooden floors.

The first is using balsa wood. You can use individual pieces of balsa to represent each floor plank or scribe them with a pencil on a larger piece which is what I use. You then cut along the pencil lines to where the destroyed floor finished and just break each individual piece of one at a time. Making sure that the extend beyond the models floor a little bit.

This gives a realistic look.

The broken pieces are not wasted but are used as debris on the floor below. Again I need to leave space for the 60mmX40mm bases of furniture.

The next technique is to use a small soldering iron with a fine point to burn the floor board lines into the mdf. This gives a lot neater look which is good for the ground floor of buildings because you don’t want jagged bits of balsa getting caught and breaking of during storage. Both take about as much time so it is a matter of preference. If you have a good engraver this will work just as well. Mine isn’t so I prefer the soldering iron.

I have been doing some more work on the other three corner pieces but am only about half way through each.

Hopefully I might get some finished over the weekend.

    • Thanks Dave. I will work through these over the next week or so, and have also almost put together the mdf train carriages from Sarissa Precision. I hate their fiddly kits kits with too much detail – who needs mdf train wheels with thin axels to move!
