Hi fellow travellers I have four of these Sarissa Precision ornate vine trellis’ to go with my Provincial Roman Villa (posted tomorrow) and a rural farm (yet to be completed).

The question is how do I make the vines. I was thinking of using pipe cleaners, but does anyone have any better ideas.

I think you might have it there… they look very much like flocked pipe cleaners to me.
Thanks Az that’s what I thought.
Winter is your friend. Vines are little more than dormant sticks in the winter
I thought the line was “Winter is coming”?
depends if you need to walk north or south to reach the wall
That is very true!
Either way the vines are still brown!
Yeah but not that interesting!
you’ve got me there, Guru
Pipe cleaners look correct. Anything involving flocking would be fiddly and liable to fall apart.
Thanks Steve.
I was going to suggest the florist wire with silver Birch tree seeds, but after you had tried to attach a couple of hundred you would have looking for me to do serious damage! I think you should take dave2718 advice!!!
You are a good judge of character!
Pipe cleaners seem a pretty good option, maybe some tiny beads or greenstuff grape bunches to really “sell it”?
Cheers Roger.
Thanks. I was looking for another green stuff project!
Garden twine, the hairy kind, dip in Pva Glue, then desired flock, and stick in desired place, when dry you can add washes to change colours and add dying patches with brown
I have seen this done to represent vines on walls, Not sure how it would go on the trellis.
I would look to floral wire and PVA glue with flock. You can then build up the coverage with hairspray and more flock. A final coat of hair spray should seal all the flock in place!
Alternatively, if you have a model Rail Road shop near by, Woodland Scenics does make a flocked webbing that can be spread out or rolled up to look like scale vines. I know this because I bought some “autumn colored” what I though was flock, but didn’t read the package close enough – picking off the flock to make flower heads was a real pain in the butt!
Either way, if your looking for realism, do the hard work, if its just tabletop gaming, pipe cleaners with green paint will do the work for you!
Good luck!
Thanks Eric. This is for tabletop gaming but I want it to look good. At the moment I am looking at pipe cleaners and some flocking but will need to give it a try.
Gaming does need some sturdiness, so sometime we compromise aesthetic for durability!
Thanks everyone for your thoughts. This “grapevine” works a treat!
Afraid I’m late to this party, Dave! 🙂 Pipe cleaners sound like the lowest risk and effort for the final result to me! I’d probably spray ’em green, wrap them round the trellis and glue them in place and then add some small pieces of Woodland Scenics clump foliage to them to give some variation.
Thanks John. That is the plan. I will try it with one to see how it goes.
I’d use pipe-cleaners atop, but bare wire, twisted as the stems that go up. A row of small dots of PVA over unstick-parchment and small gravel to make grapes, painted green, purple wash over.
Great idea for the grapes.
