The Ghosts of Crystal Cove

Are Crystal Cove and Coolsville the same? To be honest I don’t give a Scooby doggy doo about the arguments one way or the other. I like the romance and “history” that surrounds Crystal Cove. This is strange because just the mention of the name evokes “growing up” memories of being forced to watch Mum’s favourite show, “Murder She Wrote”, set in Cabot Cove! It is a wonder I wasn’t scarred for life………………what’s that nervous twitch!

Crystal Cove is a coastal town where Fred Jones, Jr., Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, Shaggy Rogers, and Scooby-Doo live. Residents believe that the town is cursed and point to a long history of paranormal activity and legendary monsters for proof.

These mysteries and the resulting hysteria fuel Crystal Cove’s local economy through tourism. Residents, including the mayor and sheriff, constantly look to capitalize on every possible unexplained phenomenon rather than get to the bottom of things, even when such mysteries commonly turn out to be fronts for criminal activity.

Because of the residents’ unwillingness to dig deeper, the gang often find themselves at odds with the rest of the town for revealing the truth behind unexplained monsters and solving the mysteries that the economy desperately needs. Nevertheless, the town does conceal very real and unexplained mysteries about a group of missing kids, the latest victims in a string of mysterious, and unsolved disappearances.

Early history

Crystal Cove Hospital

Crystal Cove was founded by a group of conquistadors led by Fernando El Aguirre and was named after the crystal sarcophagus that contained the Evil Entity, which they hid beneath the bay.

The mystical Planispheric Disk, which was used to hide the entity in another dimension, was broken into six parts to ensure the entity was never freed. But the evil creature still had enough power to influence the inhabitants of the city above the bay, resulting in the “paranormal activity” that plagued them.

By the mid-1500’s Crystal Cove had become a missionary settlement. Porto, the donkey mascot of the Fraternitas Mysterium, blows up the missionary settlement in the mid-1500’s after being corrupted by a piece of the Planispheric Disk. Friar Gabriello Serra then hides the piece in a block of cheese.

Crystal Cove Police Station

Crystal Cove was a Wild West town and at one point the sheriff, Will Williamson is killed arresting the notorious criminal Nitro Wisinski.

Seventy five years ago, the Darrow Mansion sinks into the ground, taking a piece of the Planispheric Disk, and the Darrow family, with it. Darrow University is soon built on where the mansion once stood.

The original Mystery Incorporated vanishes in the Crystal Cove Caves while searching for the Planispheric Disk, and their mascot, Professor Pericles, is sent to an animal asylum for being implicated in their disappearance.

I have had the Mystery Inc figures from Hasslefree Miniatures for some time. They have both a cartoon version and a Post Apocalyptic version which is kinda nice to know they survived the Apocalypse!

Here are some pics of them and a newly painted Ghost Busters Ghost.

Hopefully more ghost sightings for them to debunk soon!

    • Crystal Cove is introduced with the Mystery Inc Series , 2010-2011. So the short answer to your question is that it is Series number 11 of 13 (two more are planned for the near future).

There are a number of arguments, namely are they separate, the same, or is Crystal Cove a part of Coolsville.

There is also a strong argument of multi-universes:

      1) Paranormal Generic Timeline

      2) Non-Paranormal Generic Timeline

      3) Large Coolsville Timeline

      4) Small Coolsville Timeline

      5) Crystal Cove Timeline

      6) Frankencreepy Timeline

      7) Shaggy & Scooby-Doo! Get a Clue Timeline

      8) Be Cool, Scooby-Doo Timeline

All appear slightly different but yet have components of each other. The question is who cares? I don’t.

I would not go out of my way to watch the talking Great Dane who will turn 53 (477 human years?) on September 13, but if it was in front of me I would still probably enjoy it.

For me it is just another “space” to play with toys in! The Crystal Cove “timeline” allows for Conquistador, Spanish mission, western, etc gaming periods and gives you a kind of Dr Who timeline to play with! This is cool but not “Coolsville”!

  1. Where do you stand on the “It all went downhill when ScrappiDoo turned up?” divide / argument?
    *
There is an odd fan theory that the dynamic of various combinations of characters amongst older teenage / high school students and their motley vehicles in the Netflix series Stranger Things – not always two girls two boys and no dog? – was influenced by Scoobi Doo.

  2. Scrappi should be scrapped! Not sure about the link you talk about but there is definitely one with the use of the “Pass the Dutchie” by Musical Youth in both!
