When painting up figures for “The U.N.I.T.” in Doctor Who the problem is which uniform do you choose?

The traditional greens and khaki beret – a bit (olive?) drab.

Colonel Walsh in black/dark blue uniform and red beret – yuck not a favourite.

Major Wyland-Jones in Greens and a red beret – very SAS.

Brigadier Bambera in greens with a light camo and blue United Nations type Beret. Not bad.

I have finally chosen the Major Wyland-Jones in greens and a red beret option.

I am not sure where I bought the figures from but they are overly tall and gangly. They look very similar to Black Tree Designs or the ones being pawned off by Warlord Games as one of their end of range incentives as they are no longer renewing their BBC license as of the start of 2023.

Despite this, they fit in well with the rest of the other Dr Who range.

Here they are along side a variety of human and alien types.

Each 5 man section has an NCO with SMG and 4 operatives with BAR.

Nicely done Dave! 🙂 The rifles look more like FNs/SLRs to me though (and that would fit with the 1970s UK armed forces as far as early UNIT personnel go).
I agree. I was just calling them BAR’s to fit in with the Bolt Action weapons listings.
Great work, Dave! For me, UNIT will always be tied to the 70s and Jon Pertwee’s run as the Doctor, so I’m an OD lad. I concur with John on the weapons, especially as they appear to be British troops, so the FAL/SLR would be the most likely. Shame that Warlord is dropping the BBC licence but then again when they changed their international pricing and shipping a couple of years ago they lost me as a customer for the most part anyway…
IMHO you are correct on all three fronts.
Nice figures, GP. Tall and gangly works for me. I always thought that UNIT was a bit of a comedy outfit … those sideburns! 🙂
Regards, Chris.
Whodah thought guys fighting aliens a comedy outfit!
Classic Who all the way mate, Pertwee and Baker were the kings of UNIT. Saying that I do like the red beret look. As you say the figures look very tall and thin, I think they might be Warlord (but not 100% as I don’t own any).
Best Dr Who T shirt I ever saw said “Tom Baker was Dr Who…all the others were actors playing the part!”
Cheers Roger.
Agreed Pertwee and Baker are Who. The figures are indeed Warlord as it is on their base!
Great looking UNIT Dave, and the blue berries remind me of the Army Air Corp, rather than UN
Thanks Dave – I had not thought of Army Air Corps, but you’re right!
Very smart looking unit of er UNIT Dave.
Cheers,
Pete.
Nice ones and I do like how they look with all those alien minis you have! 😀
Thanks Faust. I have been collecting the Warlords Dr Who for some time as I only buy them when they are on sale.
