There are many strange creatures that live north of the Wall. Most people in Westeros could only dream of giant, furry elephants covered in armour and spikes trampling through a battlefield. Unfortunately for the enemies of the Free Folk, these War Mammoths are very much real, and they are coming south with the rest of the Free Folk forces.

Mammoths are used as mounts by the race of Giants, who inhabit the same range of territory far north of the Wall. The size proportion between a giant and a mammoth is similar to that between a normal man and a horse. The giants have not domesticated mammoths, but have been able to tame large numbers of them. Giants use mammoths as war mounts, though they can also be used as beasts of burden.

One such mammoth was used as a mount by Mag the Mighty during the battle for Castle Black, where it was used to try and tear down the massive gate and allow the wildling army to flood in. The Night’s Watch atop the Wall dropped flaming barrels of oil down on them, setting the mammoth’s hindquarters alight and causing the colossal pachyderm to bolt in terror from the battlefield, crushing one man under its foot and dragging another in flames behind it.

For my Mammoths I wanted a more “icy” look than those in the movie. I know they should be brown but just prefer are more wintery look!

Undercoated with Tamiya TS3

Painted with a watered down Vallejo Blue Grey

Painted with Citadel Aethermatic Blue contrast.

Heavily dry brushed with Vallejo white.

Ivory first coat.

Started painting the leather bits.

Most of the painting completed and the overruns painted out with Aethermatic blue.

Final completed model.

Although quite different from the traditional brown which is how the appeared in the the serial I prefer the hint of blue beneath a thick coat of woolly fur. Over the next few days I hope to complete the second one.
Looks great Dave, and must be a great feeling finally getting it off the desk.
Thanks Dave I hope to get more off the table completed over the next week.
Nicely done, Dave! 🙂 I quite like that look!
Thanks John I prefer that look rather than the brown.
I like the white look
Thanks M
Those turned out great. Much better than brown. I also really like the choice of blue undertones. 😃
Thanks mate, I was happy with how they came out.
Looks great! Love the base as well.
Thanks TUT. The base was simple. Kitty Litter Crystals for the ice and suitable grass tufts and snow scatter on a white base paint.
