Let’s hope he is finished!

With a grandmother named Nellie who also just happened to marry a Smith we grandchildren had “lotsa” fun with “Not On Your Nellie” and “Granny Smith” when growing up!

But what were its origins?

Unfortunately we are not sure, but the most common hypothesis is that the phrase comes from Cockney rhyming slang in the 1930’s, and is a shortening of “Not on your
Nellie Duff”, to rhyme with ‘puff’, meaning the air of one’s lungs.

In Australian slang the meaning -“certainly not” is the same but the term Nelly has different connotations. The first refers to a cheap wine (I call it cats pi$$ which generally comes from New Zealand), and the second usage of Nancy is similar to “Pansy” meaning an effeminate male. Of course we cannot forget “Negative Nancy” and we have all seen these on table moaning about their dice rolls!

Anyway I have digressed so back to the original purpose of this post!

Well maybe just this once! Ten days ago, Mark, from the “Man of Tin” Blog posted on some plastic robots.

I immediately had the idea that they might work well for a “quirky” Xenos Rampant force. I searched for the SCS Robots and found them on Amazon. For just over a dollar landed each I thought they were worth a try. I had very low expectations but was pleasantly surprised.

There were twelve lots of four robots and two lots of two making a total of 52 figures.

Here are the ones I decided to start with – 4 tracked robots on 40mm bases (front), four on 50mm bases (rear) and two on Bolt Action large oval artillery bases. They are approximately 40mm high or larger. So are a decent size.

I thought these two were ideal to turn into this:

Robot riding a robot! I could make two of these and they will do as leaders.

All those I have worked on so far have been cut from their bases with the two riders pinned to their mounts and glued together.

I have kept the irregular shaped bases to use as part of a Sci-fi scrap metal dump.

These four will even do as “Savage” robots.

There are also four, what I will call, objective bases.

And four bits of broken wall that I should be able to use.

These guys have a rocket propulsion unit on their backs so will make ideal flyers.

Some traditional “Lost in Space” B9 “look alike” robots.

Some strange ones.

And some Battletech type minis as well.

I thought they were good value at under AU$60.00 with free postage. More on these as I get around to painting some which may be soon as I get sick of painting Australian WW2 and destroyed buildings!

  1. Those are a nice find! I think I saw them awhile back on Amazon, but wasn’t sure if they were around 32mm scale or no? Anything you can’t use would work great for bits too!

    • Nice! The one with the tank treads really caught my eye, as it would work for a couple different rpgs and probably Stargrave too. Hopefully they will take paint, that’s sometimes the tricky part.
