A little bit of horticulture.

With our next big game being the Australian beach landing at Balikpapan only a few months away it was time to start thinking about terrain.

The Grass Wall Panel #5 Green 50 x 50 cm from Spotlight for AU $17.50 would be an excellent edition to my existing jungle terrain.

As would the Grass and Flower Panel 2 (above).

I ripped off half from each and put them back in a mixture with some other stuff to avoid a plain look.

They were then “cut up” using the backing sprue as a guide. I chose a 3 X 3 grid giving 9 “tufts” per base.

The bases were purchased on-line from Kmart. They are sold for AU$3.00 per pack of 16. The are made from a light ply, similar but more robust than balsa wood. Well worth the expense. They are slightly larger than the mdf coasters which are more ready available.

I have added the “odd” mushroom here and there so that it can be used as a “magical wood” and also to add just a bit of colour.

There are 68 bases in the photos above and there are another 20 where the glue is still drying. With the jungle pieces I already have this will be my terrain commitment for Balikpapan.

Some Japanese bunkers may happen to turn up as well!

  1. The table is 28feet by 8 feet wide! we are doing the landings at Balikpapan through to the major Japanese ambush at Coke Spur. There are now 104 bases of jungle terrain, and these are just the ones that I have completed.
