Progressively a british style of uniform was introduced. While still retaining the distinctive blkue coatee the stovepipe shako was in troduced from 1811 onwards. This was for two reasons, namely the Portuguese army was clothed from Britain, and secondly with their blue colouring the stovepipe helped to distinguish their silouette on the battlefield from the French.
