Growing up in Guru’s house was a melodic misery as my father only new of two sorts of music. Yep you guessed it Country and bloody Western. I had to sneak in Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs and the Beatles on vinyl.
One of those annoying western songs was:
“Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies above,
Don’t fence me in.
Let me ride through the wide open country that I love,
Don’t fence me in.… “
Unfortunately whilst completing this project I couldn’t get the lyrics out of my mind! It was also the title of a Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Western movie that was popular with my mother (at 91 she still loves Westerns) which made it a double whammy!
Man has this ship been really imprinted in my brain. Definitely an argument for the “nurture” side of the debate! Remember you can choose your friends but ……..
I ended up buying three packets of the Knights of Dice Pacific Fencing. Not sure about the name as I wouldn’t have thought that white picket fences were all that common in the Pacific. I am hoping to use these across a variety of periods and genres but mainly for the “Very British Civil War”, and at a pinch for my Japanese Village (they used mainly lashed bamboo or stone fences).
The three packets gave me 15 straights, 12 corners and 12 tees, which was going to be more than enough.
The fences went together very well with the base pegs and slots well aligned. The picket sections are all one piece and there is very little gluing required.
A quick spray with a cheap spray flat white undercoat and they were, for all intensive purposes, finished.
I wanted them to look “whitish” but not pristine so a bit of dry brushing with a light and then a dark ochre and they were ready for the basing.
Great fences, and things to go in them… you will of course remember that Roy Rogers horse was called Trigger.
Yes but he was a 15.3 hand palomino, not the draught horses I had in their pen!

I had to laugh Pig! dad bought a Mono record player to replace the old 78 portable( I still have it and it would have to weigh 8kg !! ) anyway that was fine but then he found out that all his old 78’s were useless ! Ah what did he do , he asked around and was rewarded with one up to date local farmer that had some vinyl that he could play!! How often did we have to hear this one LP of The great Harry sing the bloody banana boat song !!!~
Now that you mention it I feel fortunate that I avoided very early country and western!!Having said that I do cop a bit of flack from the girls when I play a some myself!!!!
