The Red lancers

Like previous posts these figures were required for a Lasalle 2 game. Lances needing replacing as well as the re-basing. I apologise for the average photos.

The 2e régiment de chevau-légers lanciers de la Garde Impériale (English: 2nd Regiment of Light Cavalry Lancers of the Imperial Guard) was a light cavalry regiment in Napoleon’s Imperial Guard.

They were formed in 1810, after the Kingdom of Holland was annexed by France, but their original purpose was to serve as hussars of the Dutch Royal Guard. The units, who were of an elite order, were known for their loyalty and military might, as well as their professionalism in and out of battle.

The “ Regiment de Chevau-Legers-Lanciers” are one of the most famous cavalry units in Napoleon’s Imperial Guard, characterized by the red color of their uniforms, the “Czapska” hat and by the unmistakable lances.

As indicated above they were originally formed as a hussar regiment, these men were transformed into lancers by a decree issued on the 23rd September 1810. Their first challenge was to learn how to handle the apparently unwieldy, but deadly lance. Several officers were sent to the Polish Lancers’ Chantilly barracks where they were drilled in the much-needed skills of the lance.

These men then passed their new found wisdom to the rest of their regiment in Versailles. The reorganisation of the new Guard Lancers resulted in a number of uniform changes that proved extremely costly. The Minister of War had to ask Napoleon himself to provide them with more money to pay for new uniforms for the men, and aren’t we glad he did!

  1. Another great looking unit Dave, your rebasing and repairs seem to be going well, and encouraged on by your need for them in your games.
