The 3 inch mortar was the main form of artillery in the jungles of New Guinea. The Australian Jungle Division contained two full platoons of medium mortars. The medium mortar was much more effective than the light mortar, whose rounds would often burst in the air.

My Jungle Division Platoon for Bolt action has the option for both. The medium mortar would always be the weapon of choice, however if you only wish to use it for a smoke barrage or if you have a few points remaining the light mortar can be useful.

In addition the Light mortar has the capacity to move and fire so can be an advantage if you are the attacker in a scenario.
