Dux Bellorum Game 28 June 2017

Darius ran a Pictish army which had no mounted troops. The foot were nearly all warriors. They were mostly Ordinary in quality but there were lots of them.

Darius’ initial set up can be seen in picture Centre 2 D.

Centre 2D

Attilla used the Sea Raider list running a large number of Noble Warriors, some Ordinary Warriors and 1 extra command pip.

Attilla’s initial set up can be seen in picture Centre 1.

PLANS

Darius’ plan was to charge forward and take the hill. Once he had possession of the hill he could take advantage of being up hill of Atilla’s troops when they attacked. Then using his greater numbers he could turn both flanks.

Attilla’s plan was to get on the hill first, form a 3 sided box and fight with all his troops on the hill with the up-hill advantage. He positioned he Noble troops in the middle.

In the following pictures Attila’s army is the closest. All references to left or right flanks are from Attila’s perspective.

Start

Darius was the Attacker and moved first.

Centre 2, Left 1 and Right 1.

Darius threw a double 1 and his troops got onto the hill.

Centre 3, Left 2 and Right 2.

Attilla advanced. His troops being Warriors were able to advance the extra distance when making contact and thus make contact the Picts on top of the hill. No side has the uphill advantage.

Centre 4 and Left 3.

The fighting in the centre has started. There have been a number of push backs. Darius has not been able to move his right flank forward and into the battle.

Centre 5, Left 4 and Right 3.

The fight continues. Darius has been able to get his left flank into the battle and is threatening Attilla’s skirmishers. On Darius right flank his troops are having difficulty crossing the river and getting into the fight.

Centre 6 and Right 4.

The fighting on the hill is getting quite bloody. No units have broken yet.

Right 5 and Right 6.

Darius destroys one of Attilla’s Warrior units, and then destroys the skirmishers.

Arthur – Myth or Legend?

I am now in a position where I can game with my old mates in Melbourne as we have purchased a “city crash pad”, so whilst this blog is not strictly a P.I.G.S. game, as the “keeper of the blog” (sounds a bit like someone who tends Irish pasture) I have decided to include these games on an on-going basis as well.

With the fledgling war games room still coming into shape, and me still feeling a bit like the country mouse visiting the city, the conditions were not ideal, but more than adequate as we found other ways to stay well lubricated (there is nothing sadder than a games room with over twenty metres of shelving void of figures – well………… maybe the space for the bar and no bar!!!!!).

20170630_190827

The gaming choices are limited until the shelves are stocked but a standard 15mm Dux Bellorum 32 point game was organised.

I had built hex terrain some time ago for Command and Colours Ancient gaming with figures but have had limited opportunity to use it so this was a chance to roll out the hex mat and show-off the terrain.

“The Welsh historian, Nennius, records twelve great victories in battle during Arthur’s time as Dux Bellorum. Much of his material is mythical, however, and the magical number 12 does not sit well for historical evidence. Some historians have argued that this is too great a number for one man’s lifetime, and their locations may well have been too widespread for a single leader to have fought in each. Counteracting this view, some believe Arthur to have headed up a warband of cavalrymen traveling around the country and championing the British cause: hence his widespread popularity. True or not, it seems likely that, as with stories attached to the real Arthur, several of these battles may have been properly associated with alternative Arthur’s or just with other great Dark Age heroes. A tendency towards Northern locations may strengthen this theory. Unfortunately identifying the location of the battles is a highly controversial pass-time” (Wikipedia).

According to Nennius, Arthur’s first battle was at the “mouth of the river called Glein”.

This has been tentatively identified as one of the two Rivers “Glen” in Britain today; one in Lincolnshire and one in Northumberland.

Unfortunately, Glen stems from the Celtic word for “pure”, so there were probably many rivers thus named in 6th century Britain. A battle at the former would have presumably been against the first Bernician settlers and at the latter against the northward moving East Anglians. Either could be also attributed to King Arthuis of the Pennines as well as Arthur Pendragon but I am assuming the later.

So there we have it – our battle is set in 6th Century Britain at the mouth of the River Glein between Arthur Pendragon and the Bernecian kingdom of Deiran.

Arthur’s army was controlled by John G. and the Saxon’s by Steve N.

The Saxon army of Deiran consisted of Foot companions, 2 Noble Riders, Noble Warriors and 4 Ordinary warriors.

3 King Deiran

Deiran King of the Bernicians

4 The Bernecian Aemy

The army of Arthur consisted of his “Round Table Companions, Noble Riders, 2 Noble Shield Wall 2 Ordinary Shield Wall, Close Order Bowmen and mounted and foot bow armed skirmishers.

The battle lines are drawn with Arthur advancing with his knights on the right flank.

6 The battle from the Roman side

7 Arthur charges into battle

7.1 Arthur and his knights charge the Saxon left

Romano British horsement v Bernician Warriors. The noble warriors on the Saxon right, just in picture, were destroyed in very short time.

8 Arthur breaks through

The “Ordinary Warriors” on the left held of the cream of Arthur’s army, including himself and his Knights of the Round Table until almost the end of the battle.

9 Deiran and his followers fight of a flank charge

Meanwhile the Saxon right wing Noble Riders have broken through the archer screen, and destroyed the majority of Arthur’s shield wall.

10 The Saxons fight of a rear attack

Hit in both the flank and rear by Noble Riders the warriors on the Saxon left are still holding on.

11 Saxon Cavalry smash into the rear of Arthurs centre

With the Romano British shield wall collapsed the centre is controlled by the Saxons.

12 Arthur in full retreat

With the last remaining shield wall covering the retreat Arthur’s battered knights flee to fight another day.

All in all a great game with which to “christen” the war games room.

Arthur myth or Legend? All I can say is that on this occasion he was certainly no legend!!

Dux Bellorum Game 31 May 2017

Darius and Attila ran the same army lists as last game two weeks ago.

That is, Darius ran a Saxon army fielding mostly quality troops. This meant the army was small in numbers.

Attila ran a large Romano British army made up of cheap troops, a Saxon ally and one extra command pip.

In the pictures Attila’s army is the closest. All references to left or right flanks are from Attila’s perspective.

Darius was the Defender. As such he selected the terrain. He decided to try something different and set down two Woods in the middle of the playing area.

Darius’ strategy was to wait behind the woods on the left flank and take opportunities to pick off enemy units as they came through. He planned to skirmish on the right.

Attila set up to fight Darius on his own side of the woods. After a while he realised that this would not happen so decided to advance through the woods on the left. To do this he used his ally who had warriors who are not disadvantaged by woods.

Attila decided to try to get around on the extreme right flank.

PICTURES.

Start.Start

This shows the starting positions form Attila’s side.

Left 1.Left 1

Attila is reforming his forces to go through and around the woods on the left.

Right 1 and Right 2.

Shows Attila’s horse trying to get around the right. Darius’ Light Bow are in the woods and move hoping to get some shots on the horse.

Centre 1.

Centre 1

Darius’ manoeuvres to a defensive posture to await the enemy coming through the woods.

Left 2 and Centre 2.

Attila has come through the woods and around the woods on the left and the battle begins. Attila has the advantage in numbers but Darius has the quality.

Right 3.

Right 3

Darius sends in a unit of Noble Riders hoping to destroy or delay the enemy Ordinary Riders.

Right 4, Right 5 and Right 6.

Not Darius’ night again. Attila’s horse destroy the Light Bow in one round and destroy the Noble Riders in the next. Then they can be seen to be galloping around the back of the woods on the right hoping to get into the rear of the enemy in the main battle on the left. They almost got there in time. But not quite.

Left 3, Left 4, Left 5 and Left 6

Show the main battle on the left. Darius inflicts serious damage on Attila’s units but does not destroy any. He is outnumbered and eventually this is his undoing. His army loses enough units and has to take moral tests to continue.

But its only a matter of time and in the end his army breaks.

Sad but true.

It must be said though that Attila had some very lucky early fights that gave him the advantage.

Dux Bellorum 17 May 2017

With being unable to attend this weeks gaming it is great to have Andrew W write the blog for this week.

But really Andrew – “Daggmore”?

Unfortunately Daggmore could not make the game today. We missed him.

So it was left to Darius and Attila.

Darius decided to run a Saxon army fielding mostly quality troops. This meant the army was small in numbers.

Attila ran a large Romano British army made up of cheap troops, a Saxon ally and one extra command pip.

IMG_5671

In the picture Attila’s army is the closest. The picture was taken after the first turn.

Unfortunately the 6/1 Demon arose and smite the camera’s battery and thus there is only one picture. The good news is we did not see him again for the rest of the game. The dicing was “normal” (Whatever that is.) – “for you Andrew that is rolling game high 2’s!!!”.

Darius launched his attack with his usual zeal and daring. Unfortunately Darius was a little outnumbered on his left flank. This problem was compounded straight away when Attila’s light foot routed one of his light foot in the first round of shooting.

The fighting on that flank resolved itself into Darius being beaten mainly due to being outnumbered and the staying power of Attila’s shield wall.

In the centre Darius crashed into the Romano British shield wall inflicting lots of damage. But not enough to kill.

The fighting over the next few rounds included many interesting sub battles.

Gradually the Saxon units were routed, mainly because they were outnumbered. This eventually resulted in the demise of the Saxons.

Wargaming – Dux Bellorum Game 8 February 2017

The peaceful Island paradise of King David was again going to be torn apart by a clash of armies, with the Imposing Cavalry Knights (Late Roman  Army) of King David facing off against the Saxon army of the evil Count Andrew the Younger in a Dux Bellorum 15mm battle.

Count Andrew the Younger had slipped away from the previous battlefield with only his Hearthguard aware that he was still alive. The family hatred for King David was burnt into his very psyche and even now, defeated and bloodied his thoughts were firmly fixed on revenge.

20170208_193947

The Saxon Invading Army

20170208_194015

The Mad Count Andrew the Younger

Months later, the Count’s planning had now reached the stage where he was ready to return from exile at the head of another army – this time determined for revenge. Learning of the mad Counts arrival on his peaceful Island King David massed his army with the intent of destroying this troublesome family once and for all.

20170208_193943

King David’s Royal Army

20170208_193955

King David and his Companions

With many of his Knights organising the grain harvest on their estates King David was forced to use his garrison and household troops to repel the invader.

20170208_195422

After a cautious advance by the invader King David unleashed his cavalry against the enemies right flank.

20170208_204322

After some initial success the battle descended into a large complicated melee. Units pushed back and forward with and both armies were gradually being “fatigued” across the confused battlefront.

Units on both sides started collapsing, but it wasn’t until Count Andrew and his companions were finally ridden down that the battle was decided.

20170208_211551

For the first time the Kings army had been pushed to its limits and it was only the bravery of the King and his Companions that fought in close combat for the whole battle that kept the morale of the army together.

Another close Dux Bellorum battle that went down to the wire.

Dux Bellorum Game 11 January 2017

The plains overlooking the seaside town of Ryll became the location again for the clash of armies, with the Imposing Cavalry Knights (Land Raider Army) of King David facing off against the Roman army of the evil Count Andrew in a Dux Bellorum 15mm battle.

Having accounted for his evil father in a previous battle King David was determined to rid his kingdom of the evil spawn, Count Andrew The Younger.

The task would be harder as Count Andrew had trained his infantry warriors in close order tactics and turned his warriors into effective shield wall.

Riding at the head of his mounted knights, King David decided to act quickly to bring the “son of a usurper” to justice.

Surprising his enemy by moving his mounted troops through the forest on his left King David attacked the enemies right-wing cavalry.

20170111_200428

The “son of a usurper” stood in the centre of the field with his Companion foot.

20170111_200450

First blood went to the king who quickly routed the enemy knights who dared to stand up to him.

20170111_204014

The King and his Companions were charged by the remaining knight unit of that Usurper Count Andrew the Younger.

20170111_210402

The King was assisted by more of his knights who charged the enemy cavalry in the flank destroying them on contact.

20170111_213948

The momentum stalled very quickly as the king’s Companions became involved in a long drawn out combat with the “son of a usurper’s” shield wall unit that had also charged him in the flank.

 20170111_214004

Both armies were loosing units as fatigue set in. Finally victory was almost assured when Count Andrew the Younger was slain and joined his father in eternal damnation.

20170111_215846

Unfortunately with only two units remaining on each side the King was forced to retire when a unit of knights broke leaving only the King and his Companions alone on the field against two demoralized shield walls. Unable to pursue the King retired to the safety of his castle.

A very close game which, with both armies almost broken, was decided by dice rolls in the end.

Pearl Harbour Remembrance day Game Blog.

Today is Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, which annually on December 7, commemorates the attack on Pearl Harbor, in Hawaii, during World War II.

Many of our allied American service men and women lost their lives or were injured on December 7, 1941.

As war gamers we should never forget the very real sacrifice and horror of war.

Today’s blog honours the memory of those who fought against all odds, today, seventy five years ago.

Dux Bellorum Game 7 December 2016

It was a long, long time ago since we delved into the mists of time with good King David.

russell-casse-650x275

But in the words of Randy Quaid “Hello boys, I’m back!!!

The independent Island kingdom of King David was again threatened, this time by the Church usurper “Fry her” David. Well known for his brutal ritual witch hunts,“Fry her” David’s gradual subjugation of the Island Kingdom had come to the notice of Good King David. The king, ever mindful of the well-being of his subjects, was determined that Independence would come that Day for his people.

Again, on the plains overlooking the seaside town of Ryll the two armies met, with the Imposing Cavalry Knights (Land Raider Army) of King David facing off against the  Roman Shieldwall Army of the evil Church usurper “Fry her” David, in a Dux Bellorum 15mm battle. The king’s army consisted of the Kings Companions and 4 imposing Knights, plus the additional command (four) provided by King David’s leadership.

Riding at the head of his mounted knights, King David decided to act quickly to bring the “usurper” to justice.

20161207_200335

The Battle began with the King advancing on his left flank, and the “usurper”, hoping to use the terrain to his advantage, gradually retreating.

20161207_200327

Finally the “usurper” could retreat no more and stood to fight on a small ridge line. A unit of skirmishers that were slowed down following previous losses could not retire quickly enough behind its supporting shield wall and was hit by the kings imposing cavalry. The result was inevitable. With one flank of the “usurpers’ army exposed , the king now turned on the enemy cavalry.

20161207_201813

Trapped between the Kings cavalry and their own infantry they had nowhere to go and without their “war paint” they stood no chance and were wiped out on contact.

20161207_203920

The brave “Fry hers” infantry withstood attacks from flank and rear and bravely protected the flank of the “Usurpers” companion unit.

20161207_213129

Surrounded and engaged on all sides one unit after another collapsed and fled.

20161207_213356

King David’s Companions delivering the “coup de grace” by riding down the “Usurpers” close order archers.

Again the peaceful Island kingdom of King David can rest, assured in the knowledge of their Independence Day.

Dux Bellorum Game 9 November 2016

Grandson, let me tell you a tale of long long ago when men were men and sheep were scared.”

“Grandfather, why are the sheep scared”?

grandfather-child-clipart

“I think you better talk to your father about that, after all he comes from the land of the long white cloud”.

“Anyway back to the story. Long ago in the mists of time lived good King David who is well known throughout the annals of history for his kindness and good works, and the dastardly usurper Count Andrew who is only known for his fight against King David. Let that be a lesson for you grandson”.

“What lesson Grandfather”?

“Oh Grandson, that if you grow up a right royal pain in the backside then you had better be whooped by someone who is loved by all those around him, then history may remember you”.

“Anyway back to the story. Long ago in the mists of time lived good King David…….”

“Grandfather where did he live?”

Sigh. “Grandson, he lived in an Island Kingdom far far away”

“Anyway back to the story. Long ago in the mists of time lived good King David…….”

“Grandfather where is the Island Kingdom”?

Exasperated! “Can you just shut up and let me tell the story…..”

Running away crying….” Mummy Grandfather is being grumpy again”.

Grandfather smiles and punches his fist in the air. “Yes!! I can now watch the 2016 Grand Final for the 145th time!!”

“FATHER………………. as a signed up Oinker (sounds like) can’t you just read him 3 Little Pigs rather than tell one of your stupid stories”.

“Stupid stories? Stupid stories! Let me tell you a thing or two young lady ………….”

For the regular readers of this blog let me just tell you the unexpurgated “ stupid story” undisturbed as it really happened.True dinks.

Long long ago in an island kingdom far far away lived good King David who was being challenged by the dastardly usurper Count Andrew (but I guess you knew that by now).

On the plains overlooking the seaside town of Ryll the two armies met, with the Imposing Cavalry Knights (Land Raider Army) of King David facing off against the Saxon  Warrior Army of the evil Count Andrew in a Dux Bellorum 15mm battle.

The progress of the battle was aptly captured in the words of those great Manowar poets -Ross the Boss and Joey DeMaio,

“By moonlight we ride ten thousands side by side

With swords drawn held high our whips and armour shine

Hail to thee our infantry still brave beyond the grave

All sworn the eternal vow the time to strike is now.”

20161109_194535

The battle began with Knights of King David thundering over the hills into the right flank of the usurper, Count Andrew.

20161109_194630

King David charging at the front of his Knights.

20161109_194707

The usurper Count Andrew fighting on foot as the peasant he soon showed himself to be.

20161109_200826

The downhill thundering hooves and cold steel of King David’s Knights proved too much for the usurpers cavalry and they broke almost on contact.

20161109_202630

The infantry on the Saxon right flank was quickly surrounded but fought on far more manfully than their mounted friends.

20161109_20200220161109_201047

The unanswered prayers of Count Andrew caused him to curse his Gods, and he switched allegiance not once but twice. All to no avail as you would expect from such a fickle follower.

20161109_202927

King David and his Companions broke the last mounted troops of the usurper leaving his right flank all but destroyed.

20161109_205417

King David finally unleashed his reserves to attack the usurper and his fellow traitor companions who had already suffered losses.

The weight of hoof, superior cavalry, and cold steel caused the traitors to falter and then slowly retreat, causing all but one of his units to flee.

With this the battle and the usurpers head were lost.

20161109_205502

 King David triumphant!!

Whilst the Gods were certainly in the King’s favour the fact that he was able to bring overwhelming superiority in both numbers and quality at the decisive point meant that victory was achieved in short time.

Another great game of Dan Mersey’s Dux Bellorum.

Dux Bellorum Game 20th October 2016 Hi All, We had an excellent if somewhat quick game of Dux Bellorum yesterday. The game started with Dave K moving his force of land raiders forward to attack Andrew’s Saxons. Andrew had a cunning plan which was thwarted when his cavalry rolled a double move, which he used to charge full tilt into the raiders cavalry. The results were at first underwhelming but when the Saxon infantry entered the fray the weight of numbers gradually told. Andrew has of course taken full responsibility for this complete victory.
