In da jungle!

Finally finished putting the “stuff” on the bases for our jungle game.

I ended up with just enough plastic to make 100 bases.

This was four short of my goal of covering my 7’X4′ table with new jungle terrain.

I of course already have over 50 bases so I really should not quibble. The obsession comes from having a 40k love affair with the Catachan Jungle Fighters.

I used to love playing them with the Codex Catachan where they could actual fight!

The Jungle Terrain Generator used to create lots of laughter as your opponent’s models were eaten by an over-sized Venus Fly Trap!

I plan on painting the edges and flocking them 6 bases at a time. I will try and do one lot a day to fin ish them off by the end of March.

Back to a different sort of jungle fighters tomorrow.

PS Update: I found enough scraps on the floor and the workbench to make the total up to 104!

When Nightmares Come

When Nightmares Come is a tabletop game about modern monster hunting and occult investigations. Players will form a team of paranormal vigilantes who aim to tackle supernatural horrors and investigate strange disturbances in their city.

It is available for pre- order, but will be on sale by the end of March.

The game utilizes an Action Dice Pool for fast and intense combat, with different enemy levels, varied player classes, quick combat resolution, and clear mission objectives. This sounds very similar to the Ronin mechanism but we will have to wait and see.

Additionally, the game includes a roleplaying element for non-combat challenges and dramatic encounters. This narrative system adds a new dimension to the miniatures experience, particularly in longer campaigns, offering different foes and storylines for extended playability.

I am looking forward to this one as I was extremely disappointed by the new release (August 2023) “Doomed”, also from Osprey, and like the idea of fighting the supernatural. “Buffy” eat your heart out!

Patrick Todoroff’s previous offering, Zona Alpha, is an excellent game so here’s hoping.

PS. Over the next few months Osprey are bringing out The Hill: The brutal fight for hill 107 during the battle of Crete (May 2024); Silver Bayonet: Egypt (May 2024); and Borneo:1945 (October 2024). They all look as if they might be worth a look at as well.

Batman

I am way behind on battle reports. A few weeks ago Batman and Commissioner Gordon went to dispense justice on the Joker and Harley Quinn.

The saga begins with Catwoman advancing on some of Harley’s thugs.

Batwoman seizes an objective.

The thin blue line advance.

A police marksman hides in the top story of a derelict department store.

The Jokerrs thugs advance against the police.

Harley swings…………………………

Harley falls …………………….. as commissioner Gordon arrests the felon.

Catwoman takes on Harley’s cats – well Hyenas anyway.

Buddy wins as Catwoman stops purring.

Soon after Buddy meets revenge as Bullock cages the Hyena.

The Joker decides he needs to get serious and aided by two thugs takes out one of the boys in blue.

Bullock’s arresting demeanour captures another thug.

The Joker is taken out by the Police marksman with his last shot.

batman and Robin clean up the streetsby quickly dispatching the last two thugs.

A great game was had by all.

A new find for me at least!

I was looking at the Bolt Action Campaign Book, “D-Day: British & Canadian Sectors” and came across a commando list for NW Europe Late – War Commando Heavy Weapons Troop (Reinforced Platoon), on page 137.

As I had most of the figures and because I like playing with “different” (code for weird) armies I decided to buy the few figures I needed. I found the cheapest way to buy the extra Medium Mortar and machine Gun was to buy the British Commandos Support group.

The extra command, forward observer and medic will all come in useful for when I eventually get around to putting my SAS figures together. I also wanted to put together some different squads such as a Engineer Section and a small commando section For this I needed a flame thrower, and a light machine gun. I also wanted a sniper for this and my standard commando army. The newish resin Commando Weapons Teams box has exactly what I was after. I bought two.

Although I already had a Commando light howitzer I wanted an additional one so purchased the British Airborne Light Howitzer set.

The final piece in the jigsaw is a Crusader AA tank which I am hoping to find an stl digital file for as they are not sold in Australia.

All this arrived very promptly from Drew at the “Wargame Holiday Centre Australia”

Now all I have to do is paint them!

A little bit of horticulture.

With our next big game being the Australian beach landing at Balikpapan only a few months away it was time to start thinking about terrain.

The Grass Wall Panel #5 Green 50 x 50 cm from Spotlight for AU $17.50 would be an excellent edition to my existing jungle terrain.

As would the Grass and Flower Panel 2 (above).

I ripped off half from each and put them back in a mixture with some other stuff to avoid a plain look.

They were then “cut up” using the backing sprue as a guide. I chose a 3 X 3 grid giving 9 “tufts” per base.

The bases were purchased on-line from Kmart. They are sold for AU$3.00 per pack of 16. The are made from a light ply, similar but more robust than balsa wood. Well worth the expense. They are slightly larger than the mdf coasters which are more ready available.

I have added the “odd” mushroom here and there so that it can be used as a “magical wood” and also to add just a bit of colour.

There are 68 bases in the photos above and there are another 20 where the glue is still drying. With the jungle pieces I already have this will be my terrain commitment for Balikpapan.

Some Japanese bunkers may happen to turn up as well!

Last Beastie

I found one more “Beastie” which is fortunate because I have been enjoying finishing these off as they have been something new to provide an break from dowdy Khaki.

This one looks distinctly like a GW casting but I am not sure.

What a handsome boy you are!

More snarling beasties

More fihgures found during my recent clean up. Not sure who made or what they were originally for, but they will make great canine beasties for Silver Bayonet.

Some of you out there mat be able to enlighten me on what they are.

These have made a great break from painting WW2 Australians, but alas with our next “big” fight being the Australian landings at Balikpapan I need to paint up more tanks and infantry – and then there is the Japanese!

OOP 3rd Edition Dark Eldar Warp Beasts

To say these have been around and needing painting for a long time is a bit of an understatement. They are great models and I am surprised they weren’t painted earlier.

I have been tidying up my “stuff” and turning an unused bedroom into a study (code for man cave) with all my books and some prized miniatures in order to become totally distracted!

During this process I found these Warp Beasts and paintyed them up straight away!

Tomorrow some more “beasties” that I re-discovered.
