A “work-in-progress” F28 team

I am painting up a small group of Mantic Deadzone “Enforcer” figures for our F28games, and maybe the occasional Deadzone game.

If I have it right this should make a 60 point team. Our resident F28 “Guru” ( but not THE GURU!) is giving me feedback to make sure I have things correct. Thanks “JB”!

A “marine” Sergeant almost finished.

A “riot marine” with riot shield.

A “marine heavy” with big shoota.

A D.O.G. drone with big shoota. If any one knows what the D.O.G. stands for can you let me know.

A pathfinder sniper.

A pathfinder NCO with pistol, a hope and a prayer!

Pathfinder with rifle.

I hope to have these finished for our next game on Tuesday night.

Setting a scene of my own

In my post on “setting the scene” I showed how I received depth in the photos by using a professional backdrop that I had purchased.

I looked at their site again and was not happy with the jungle one they had available as they did not have a picture and I needed one that was dense and close enough for New Guinea.

Firstly I found a photo I liked

I then increased the size to A4 and printed off a couple. Don’t worry about the clarity too much as it is only for a backdrop. Mine lost some clarity but was still OK as the pics below show.

I next glued it onto 2mm mdf and that was it! I didn’t get all of the wrinkles out but that didn’t seem to matter either. The join line was acceptable and the matching didn’t look to out of place.

Even without hiding the “horizon line”, which I normally do, it was still acceptable

The board in action:

Some time down the track I will make a desert and a snow one.

“I have the power”!

The CMON Battle for Eternia Kickstarter finally arrived today. I am still awaiting a few more KS’s but they are still a little way of at the moment. Again this one was great value.

2 Large boxes arrived in the post.

Full of lots of goodies.

Battle board neoprene mat.

Not as large ad the one for the action figures, but large enough anyway.

Lots of 3D hex terrain.

Both son and grandson’s are jealous, but no sympathy as I did tell them about it! Maybe I may just let them play with it! I can be bribed with most things.

Second Generation Plague Leapers (1)

Second generation infected “leapers” are a stunningly brutal mix of power, speed, and aggression.

Post-mortem exams of specimens brought down in Containment Protocol enforcements have revealed a massive increase in muscle fibre density alongside the basic increase in bulk.

This makes them disproportionately strong which explains the ability of such a large creature to ‘leap’ across a battlefield with such ease.

These are some of the old mantic models which I think are better than the new ones which I will display in a few days time.

Searching for a needle in a haystack! An F28 skirmish game.

The Aliens have landed and are searching for a small radioactive needle in a Western Australian haystack! For those who are not aware of the pun please click on this! I was once told by an old boss, “if it is a choice between a conspiracy and a stuff up go for the stuff up every time”! Seems he was correct – it wasn’t terrorists or aliens after all.

This was a three-way game between my grey Aliens, Rod’s super duper Hunters and Tyrone’s jungle fighters. I won the initiative for the first turn and raced towards the haystack and with my first initiative. With my second I searched and failed my 50% chance of finding it.

Not to be outdone I chose to use one of my three fate points on a re-roll and again failed! DOH!

This mean it wasn’t in this haystack and I had to search the second one right in the middle of the Jungle Fighters deployment. So much for superior technology. The aliens with their inferior intellect will pay for this!

I try to prov ide a fire base to support an assault on the next haystack (they can be very vicious you know).

Second turn and chaos reigns. My fglamer moves up and causes havoc with the jungle aliens. The jungle fighters opened fire with their sniper on the heroic freedom fighter with the flamer before the fire ball was unleashed and missed. A second dude fired……….. and missed. A third fired and you guessed ……… and missed!

Truth justice and the Martian way wins out!

The flamer took down the leader, a medic and another jungle fighter, and those Martian heroes in support started clearing up the rest. Another truth and justice fighter reached the haystack and found it immediately before being pinned by the big bad bounty hunters.

The end of turn two with most of the action happening around the second haystack.

Minor skirmishing happening on the rest of the battlefield. We had now reached the end phase for trun two and the Martian freedom fighters had a cunning plan to defeat the “aliens”. As I was pinned I could elect to fall back between 6″ and 12″ ignoring terrain restrictions. I just need to exit any table edge with the radio active needle. It was agree that because I was only pinned I could take the needle with me.

Here I am with the radioactive needle less than 6″ from the table edge. My Leader and two others fell back to protect the heroic Martian.

Hell was reigning down from everywhere as the “aliens” concentrated their fire on the poor innocent Martian.

The hero, Marvin, need to roll a six to save from the only attack to hit him. Marvin of course succeeded. A fate token was used by the dastardly alien bounty hunters to force a re-roll. Marvin again succeeded with a second six. This time the jungle fighters used a fate token to force a re-roll. Again Marvin successful! The bounty hunters decided to use their last fate token to force a re-roll and this time the poor Marvin failed. Not daunted he pulled out his lucky charm in the form of the Martians last fate token …………….HE FAILED!

A martyr for the cause of truth and justice. Marvin the Martian Martyr will forever be remembered (at least while this post is on the WWW anyways!). The Martian leader and Marvins two other supports were pinned and the cause appeared hopeless.

With our spaceship hovering overhead the Martian contingent were beamed up along with the radioactive needle. The dastardly Bounty hunters and the very uncouth Jungle Fighters were also beamed up and subjected to medical research by probing “where the sun don’t shine”!

Remember – Guru says, “only winners and little grey men with fast space ships write history”!

See “things that go bump in the night” post.

A great and hilarious scenario of F28.

A pity the heroes grasped defeat from the jaws of victory.

This totally unbiased account was taken from the Martian Daily Gazette.

The two classes of Aberrations

Aberrations fall into two classes: monochromatic and chromatic.

Monochromatic aberrations are caused by the geometry of the lens or mirror and occur both when light is reflected and when it is refracted. They appear even when using monochromatic light, hence the name.

Chromatic aberrations on the other hand are caused by dispersion, because of this dispersion, different wavelengths of light come to focus at different points. Chromatic aberrations do not occur when monochromatic light is used.

Well, a few days ago we had a chromatic aberration above, and today we have a monochromatic one below!

Not really, but why have one aberration when you can have two!

“His mine”!………”No his Mine”!

Fist Full of Lead (FFOL) game report

Pack your six gun and Stetson and get set for some rootin’ tootin’ action from last weeks Axes and Ales club game.

A shot of Dry Gulch overlooking the church and “Woody’s” saloon and ahem……”house of entertainment” with young ladies standing outside.

Marshal, Virgil Earp moving into cover. Few people realise that at the OK Coral it was Virgil who was the town Marshal and who had more military and law enforcement experience than his later more famous younger brother Wyatt.

It was a three sided (but quite one-sided in the end ) game between randomly allocated gangs.

Rod’s or should I say Joachim’s gang from South of the Rio Grande, Jason’s Clanton Gang, and my Earp brothers, ably assisted by a Doc on holiday. The Earp’s were trying to capture (dead or alive) Billy Clanton, the Clanton’s were keen on protecting their turf from the five Joachim’s, who in turn were in town to give the Earp brothers a hard time.

The Earp brothers strategy was to manoeuvre into a better position while the two baddies shoot it out amongst themselves. The plan worked as they couldn’t help but get stuck into each other.

One of the Mexicans is pinned from Clanton rifle fire.

Don’t yah love it when a plan comes together!

The Clanton’s move passed the school house, much to the dismay of the school Mame.

One of the Joachim’s voyeuristic tendencies showed themselves as he peers into one of Woody’s windows.

Joachim shoots Frank MaClaury dead at short range.

Who is promptly killed in revenge by Ike Clanton

Billy Claiborne is pinned by Mexican fire.

My that’s a big pistol you have Joachim!

Billy Claiborne who had just recovered is shot dead by Doc on Holiday.

The pig pen is not a good place to end your dental practice, as the Doc succumbs to lead poisoning.

The Clanton’s clean up two more Joachim’s much to the dismay of the young “ladies” who had lost two potential customers.

As night sets in Dry Gulch the three Earp brothers are alone left standing. One Wounded Joachim and a wounded Billy Clanton are now in jail awaiting trial. The town undertaker has seven more graves to add to boot hill.

They fought the law and the law won!

An hilarious game was enjoyed by all. With Woody’s being the butt (pun intended) of many a ribald remark!

The Plague

My Deadzone Plague faction, which is my favourite, has been waiting to be painted until I finally worked out what colours I wanted to paint them. There is the “old school” pink plague monsters:

And the new blue painting scheme which is significantly better.

Neither of these really fitted the planetary system of “Ascalabotes” which I wanted to use as my setting for Xenos Rampart games. The system consists of a major planet with a number of moons all habitable, covered with jungles and large waterways.

I needed something that was going to fit with this type of terrain.

First encountered in the so-called ‘Death Arc’, an area in the Fifth Sphere of the GCPS, the Plague is one of the greatest threats to all sentient life in the galaxy. Whether the Plague is natural in origin or was, in fact, engineered by some ancient alien civilisation is just one of the many questions surrounding this horrific disease. Its link to artefacts of alien origin is established, though their purpose and provenance remains mysterious.

Wherever it comes from, the Plague seems able to mutate and adapt to new hosts at a remarkable rate. Infected creatures exhibit symptoms within an extremely short space of time, though the exact manifestation of symptoms varies for reasons not entirely clear. Some humans infected by Plague become hideous monsters the size of a combat walker. These beasts seem to act as the control hub of Plague forces, directing lesser creatures which range from razor taloned, leaping hunters to simple, slow moving drones which seem to retain some sense of their former identity and may even be seen operating machinery, weapons and vehicles. In spite of the best efforts of the Council and the Enforcers, every instance of Plague infestation to date has ended in massive losses. The effort to study and understand it continues, but for now, extreme measures like Containment Protocol are the only available response.

Mantic Games.

I was painting some more of my Lizardmen and then it dawned on me. If this species developed a form of jungle camouflage surely the plague monsters would mutate with something similar. Problem solved. A couple of hours was spent putting them together and getting this first prototype painted. This figure was chose as it was assembled, based and undercoated ready to go.

Plague ‘Aberrations” (the model in the pics) are errors of the Plague’s forced restructure of a host body. Twisted beyond recognition from their original form, this colossal monster’s overwhelming urge is to kill all living beings on sight.

Taking on some mercenaries.

I will fit these in between other figures already in the production line, but who knows I might just get the urge to concentrate on them. Tomorrow, a Plague Lord.

Melody Pond/River Song

This model was the give away November Limited Edition from Warlord Games. As I was trying to collect the rest of the Dr Who range I didn’t have, I ended up with a few of them.

Alex Kingston as River Song

Melody is a half-human/half-Time Lord, as well as the child of Amelia Pond & Rory Williams, conceived on the TARDIS after their honeymoon.

River Song in her black leathers as she was most often dressed in.

The Tenth Doctor first met her in the Library in the 51st century, where it would be the last time for her, and it only gets more confusing from there.

They move roughly in opposite time directions, and depending on what end of the timeline they’re on respectively, they each know secrets about each other that they’re unable to talk about without creating paradoxes.

The other reason is that her mother was abducted by a splinter group of the Papal Mainframe, a religious order who nominally protected certain sections of the universe. This splinter group, led by Madame Kovarian, foretold of the Doctor’s arrival on a world called “Trenzalore”, where, due to a confluence of events, the Last Great Time War would begin anew leading to the Doctor’s permanent death.

Engaging in extremes to prevent this, Kovarian abducted Amelia, held her captive on the asteroid “Demon’s Run”, and forcibly removed Melody from her mother upon birth, the idea being to train her as an assassin who would utilize her Time Lord abilities to insert herself into her parents’ timeline as a friend called “Mels”.

Gaining intel, she would then move in and at the right time, kill the Doctor for good, succeeding in one timeline.

What Kovarian didn’t count on was Melody genuinely falling in love with him, even marrying him at a moment where his death was prevented, causing time to freeze but history to happen all at once.

River was mostly human, with some Time Lord DNA, and was conceived by her parents, Amy Pond and Rory Williams, aboard the TARDIS as it travelled through the Time Vortex.

She was then raised and conditioned by the Silence, who used her unique DNA to transform her into the first of several Proto-Time Lords, granting her great strength, a deep understanding of the complex principles of time and space, and the ability to regenerate.

She loved the Doctor dearly, and shared a long-lasting relationship with them.

River was one of the very few people who knew the Doctor’s true name.

As I said, I ended up with a few of them. I will use the one in black for Dr Who games and the others for Post Apocalyptic survivors.

On the shooting range.
