Lion Rampant Siege game.

It has taken me some time to get to a couple of Battle Reports which I hope to finish in the next few days. Back to our Lion Rampant campaign.

The besiegers move forward to attack.

Alliances have changed, shifting the balance of power in the region, and the glorious army of Gotiffredo Grimaldi, the Generale from Genoa, takes the field with the mongrols from Milan, united in their efforts to defend a key Milanese fortress from impending threats. The fortress, a symbol of resilience and strategic importance, stands tall against the skyline, its ancient walls whispering tales of past battles fought and victories earned.

As the troops gather their strength, the men and women of both factions exchange determined glances, ready to face the trials ahead, despite lingering doubts about their unity and the unpredictable nature of warfare. The sun rises on the horizon, casting long shadows as the soldiers prepare themselves for the challenges that await, hoping that their combined forces will be enough to thwart any advancing enemies and secure peace for their homeland.

Siege engines are pushed forward

The Milanese man the walls inflicting some casualities on the advancing seige towers.

Not content with defending the walls, the Genoan and Milanese knights, clad in their shining armor, charge out of the gates, their banners fluttering in the wind like vibrant flames of honor. “Sound the charge into glory ride!” they shout in unison, their voices echoing across the tumultuous battlefield, reflecting their unyielding spirit. With swords drawn and hearts ablaze, they plunge into the fray, determined to reclaim their land and honor, ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead as the clash of steel rings out in the air.

Brave and stalwart Genoese infantry, clad in their shining armor and armed with formidable weaponry, stand resolutely prepared to face any challenge that may come their way as they man the battlements, determined to protect their homeland against overwhelming odds and fiercely defending their position with unwavering courage and fierce loyalty to their cause.

Papal siege engines – the spawn of the devil! These formidable machines, crafted under the directive of the papacy, were not merely tools of war; they represented the might of the Church during tumultuous times, as they laid siege to cities and fortifications, instilling fear in the hearts of adversaries. With their towering wooden frames and the thunderous sounds of their operations, they were a testament to human ingenuity and a dark symbol of religious fervor intertwined with the brutal realities of medieval warfare. Whispers among the townsfolk labeled them as instruments of divine retribution, blurring the line between righteous intent and unholy destruction. The very sight of these engines would normally send chills down the spines of defenders, but not the Genoese, the mice from Milan – who knows.

The crossbowmen of Gotiffredo Grimaldi stand firm to defend the breach in the flimsy Milanese castle wall, their eyes sharp and focused, scanning the horizon for any signs of the enemy advance. As the sun dips low, casting long shadows over the smoldering battleground, the air fills with the palpable tension of impending conflict. The men, clad in leather armor and bristling with an array of crossbows, know that the weight of their duty hinges on their unwavering resolve. Each soldier tightens their grip on the stock of their weapon, ready to unleash a hail of bolts that could deter the assailants and protect their territory. The echoes of distant clashing steel serve as a harsh reminder of the stakes at hand, fueling their determination to hold the line against any foe daring enough to breach their defenses.

A great game was had by all using Lion Rampant siege rules.

Irish Revenge outside Veðrafjǫrðr

The name ‘Waterford’ comes from Old Norse Veðrafjǫrðr ‘ram (wether) fjord’. The Irish name is Port Láirge, meaning “Lárag’s port”. Viking raiders first established a settlement near Waterford in 853.

Donagh Ó Connacháin

Having been informed of a Viking supply train heading into Veðrafjǫrðr, ceann cine (clan leader) Donagh Ó Connacháin decided it was time for revenge on the Norse usurpers, who had long pillaged his lands and oppressed his people. With a determined heart and a fierce desire to reclaim his family’s honour, he called upon his loyal warriors to gather under the cover of darkness.

Veðrafjǫrðr in Viking times

Together, they meticulously planned an ambush, strategically positioning themselves along the path the supply train would take. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting eerie shadows through the thick forest, the tension tightened among the men, each one eager for the moment they could confront their foes and restore their people’s pride.

Initially, the raid went well with one wagon having been captured, its contents rich with supplies and treasures of significant value. However, as the raiders reveled in their early success, things took a decidedly down-hill turn when an Irish noble, fueled by a fierce desire to defend his homeland, charged at Olaf the archer, who was soon to be named the Giant Slayer for his imposing stature and relentless bravery. This noble, confident in his ability to turn the tide of battle, galloped forward with his sword raised high, only to be abruptly halted when an arrow, unexpectedly swift and deadly, struck him squarely between the eyes before he even reached halfway to his target. The shock of the moment echoed through the ranks, transforming what began as a promising raid into a chaotic struggle for survival, as the remaining defenders scrambled to adapt to the sudden turn of events.

Revenge was swift as a Viking archer was pierced by Irish justice.

The Viking shield wall, steadfast and imposing, advanced with their leader cowering in the midst, as they “bravely” charged an Irish kern. This fierce warrior, although pushed backwards by the daunting odds of four to one, stood resolutely in defiance, showcasing incredible courage against the usurpers. With each step, the clash of shields echoed through the air, and the tension mounted, for the Irish kern knew that surrender was not an option; his heart burned with the fire of his ancestors as he prepared to fight for his homeland, determined to hold his ground despite the overwhelming assault.

With one wagon captured the Irish spearmen now turn to face the Viking shield wall.

The Viking archery counter-fire was devastating, its rapid volley of arrows raining down upon the battlefield with deadly precision as two of the brave Irish archers were wounded, falling to the ground amidst the chaos. The air thickened with the sounds of steel clashing and the cries of warriors, each moment stretched by the tension of the struggle, while those remaining on the Irish flank fought valiantly to protect their comrades, unwilling to succumb to the relentless assault.

The Viking shield wall launched a ferocious assault against the Irish kerns, their battle cries echoing across the battlefield as the clash of steel rang in the air. In the midst of this chaotic engagement, the “brave” Viking leader fought timidly, and was the only one to falter amidst the fray, his sword faltering when it mattered most. Despite his moment of weakness, the Viking forces remained resolute, and their fierce determination resulted in the loss of only two more Irish raiders, showcasing the relentless intensity of the encounter and the valor displayed by both sides as they fought for their honour and land.

The Irish morale stood firm as Donagh Ó Connacháin was recalled to witness the birth of his son and heir, a moment that filled his heart with both pride and trepidation. As he journeyed back to his homeland, thoughts of legacy and duty swirled in his mind, each step representing the hopes of his ancestors and the future of his lineage. Family and friends gathered in anticipation, their faces a mix of joy and concern, knowing that this new life symbolized resilience amidst the challenges they faced. The air was thick with the scent of earth and the sounds of celebration, as songs of old were sung in honor of the new arrival, reinforcing the bonds that held their community together.

The Irish still fought on bravely with Olaf being charged by the Irish “wolf-skin”, a fierce and formidable warrior known for his unmatched bravery in battle and his ferocious loyalty to his kin. As the chaos of the skirmish enveloped them, history repeated itself as Olaf drew his bowstring taut, his muscles tensing with the strain, and another valiant noble, caught in the fierceness of the fray, was wounded by a well-aimed shot that seemed to echo the tales of old where fate determined the fall of men. The cries of valour and the clash of swords resonated through the air, mingling with the shouts of warriors as the Irish warriors fought with unwavering spirit against overwhelming odds, determined to secure their legacy and honour.

In desperation, Olaf was charged by an Irish archer, whose fierce determination was matched only by his skill with the bow. The archer drew back his string with great precision, aiming intently, but despite his usual accuracy, he missed for the first time that fateful day. Seizing this opportunity, Olaf summoned all his strength and courage, swiftly countering with a well-aimed strike that dispatched the unfortunate Irishman to the mythical realms of Tír na mBeo, a place said to be filled with eternal beauty and the whispers of those who had fallen in battle. The air crackled with tension as onlookers held their breath, witnessing the dramatic turn of events where hope and despair intertwined in that moment.

The lone Irish archer stood bravely before he also was summoned to his ceann cine’s celebratory feast in honour of his newborn son, a joyous occasion that brought together friends, family, and fellow warriors from far and wide, each eager to share in the festivities that would mark the beginning of a new life and the continuation of their noble lineage.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm golden light over the gathering, laughter and song filled the air, creating an atmosphere rich with the scent of roasted meats and sweet pastries, while the archer, feeling a mix of pride and longing, held his bow tightly, ready to showcase his skill as a reminder of his loyalty and dedication to his kin.

The usurpers were taught a lesson that the Irish would never submit to the yoke of oppression, a resolve that ran deep in their veins and echoed through generations. Their fierce spirit, born from centuries of struggle and sacrifice, ignited a flame of resistance that could not be easily extinguished. Time and again, Donagh Ó Connacháin would stand united against tyranny, demonstrating that this rich heritage and unwavering pride made him a formidable opponent. This indomitable will sent a clear message to oppressors everywhere that the Irish clan leader was not a mere subject to be ruled, but a proud leader determined to reclaim his freedom and assert the clan’s rightful place in history.

Liam and I had a great game, with alas the above saga not really telling the true tale of the Irish debacle!

Camel Tomes

Although it is theoretically possible for any creature to be reanimated as a zombie, some animals, like humans and camels, seem to have a VIP pass to the zombie party, thanks to certain biological quirks that make their systems more susceptible to decay and reanimation.

Imagine a camel, complete with a jaunty zombie swagger, stumbling through the desert, raising eyebrows and a few laughs as it tries to find a suitable snack that doesn’t involve sand.

This hilarious scenario poses some eyebrow-raising questions about life, death, and how many brains it takes to make a good ecosystem—because let’s be honest, nobody wants a zombie camel crashing their picnic!

While other species are around, only a select few seem to have the right combination of charm and genetic mischief to join the undead club, leading us to ponder what really makes a creature “alive” when the line between life and brains gets a bit blurry.

Zombie camels, resembling pitiable tourists as they shuffle across the hot sands, can surprisingly turn fierce when threatened, making travelers think twice about shortcuts through the desert.

Their once-majestic forms are now shadows of their past, and they carry memories of better days.

If disturbed, these camels become swift defenders of their territory and serve as reminders of the harsh realities of their sunbaked home, balancing between being silly creatures and snack-seeking predators.

These grotesque beings have a ravenous appetite for flesh and will bite at living creatures with a horrible intensity, using their powerful jaws to inflict severe wounds.

Their shambling gait can deceive one into thinking they are harmless, but once within striking distance, the threat they pose becomes all too real.

Furthermore, killing a zombie camel is no easy task, as they are remarkably resilient and difficult to put down for good, often rising again after being seemingly dispatched, thus instilling fear in those who dare to wander too close to their desolate territories.

Did you know that Australia has more camels than Egypt? Yes, you heard that right! We’re basically the surprise camel capital of the world, exporting our furry friends to Saudi Arabia like they’re the newest trend in pet ownership. It’s funny to think these camels initially arrived as transport and laborers for our rugged outback, but now they’re the original party crashers of the desert, with a population that’s ballooned to about a million! Thanks to our unique climate, they’ve been living their best lives—think endless sandy beaches and no need for sunscreen. Australia has become the ultimate camel delivery service to the Middle East, satisfying demand for racing, breeding, and cultural coolness. Who knew our exports would lead to a camel racing league instead of a coffee export?

Hysteria over Historia

I often wax lyrical about new figures, but not often about their manufacturer. I was trying to find some cheaper alternatives for some of the “bad guys” for Silver Bayonet and came across Studio Historia Miniatures.

I was not surprised that they had cheaper Zombie camels and Serpopards for “Egypt the Shadow of the Sphinx” than “North Star”. What I was surprised about was their extensive range of historicals, moderns, fantasy and post apocalyptic, all at reasonable prices.

Zombie Camels

Here they are. No flashing and great detail. They do not come with bases but they stand flat (except for the three legged one) and are very evocative.

Egyptian Serpopards

They are far more detailed and and heroically larger than those from the Silver bayonet range which is far more appropriate for a horror monster!

I was also quite take with this must have post apocalyptic family

Again quite detailed with excellent poses. The little girl eating is very well done.

My experience with postage from Greece has been average at best, but Studio Historia were quick to print and post and they arrived within days. They have a huge range and are well worth a look at.

Backyard Starship

I have been reading this Sci-Fi military series for a while and thought I should let you know about it. Now don’t get me wrong this is not Hemingway or Tolstoy, but the fact that I am up to Book 8 shows that it is not a bad read.

After his grandfather’s death, Van Tudor returns to his childhood home and inherits more than just the family farm.

Van Tudor

All crew pictures obtained from the Backyard Starship Wiki.

Van is met at the farm by the family attorney (but is she more?), and friend of “gramps”, Miryham Nunzio, who outlines his inheritance from the Grandfather that was such a part of his life growing up.

Miryham Nunzio

Van’s grandfather captivated him with incredible stories of spacemen, monsters, princesses, and galactic knights, creating vivid images of epic battles and ancient truths that suggested these tales might be more than mere fantasy, hinting at secrets waiting to be discovered.

Hidden within the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, later named Fafnir, not of this world.

The ship is controlled by an AI named Netty, who is more friend and confidant than digital controller.

Van starts his journey through the galaxy with his combat AI, an android shaped like a golden eagle named Perry, who is a fierce protector and wise companion. As they travel, Van realizes it is lively and dangerous, filled with vibrant civilizations, strange alien species, allies who offer help, and hidden threats. His skills are tested as he navigates tricky alliances and confronts foes. He soon discovers he is meant to become a Galactic “Peacemaker,” a respected agency known for maintaining peace and justice in the chaos of the cosmos, a role requiring bravery and strong moral values as he strives to uphold order in a changing universe.

Perry, the combat AI

The crew is an eclectic bunch whose characters are developed throughout the narrative.

Torina is a Human Female. She was initially a passenger for Van, headed home to Helso. Taking her there was his second job. She is a member of the family that owns Helso, which is rich in helium 3 deposits. She is strong, and a practitioner of the martial art of Innsu, as well as a very good shot with ships’ weapons

Icky

Female Wu’tzur (hairy ape like creature with four arms) and daughter of the engineer Urnak. Also an engineer, and brilliant. Comes aboard for the ride to Anvil Dark, the home of the Peacemakers, and along the way increases the efficiency of the Fafnir, leading to Van accepting her as the ships engineer. The only thing she enjoys more than tinkering with the ship is bashing people with her hammer making her a more than efficient combat team member. Just don’t order her to capture someone alive as it ain’t gunna happen!

Zenophir (Zeno)

Zeno is a P’nosk who resembles a walrus with bushy whiskers and bright red ears. Initially an informant for Van’s grandfather, Zeno, a skilled engineer and armorer, eventually becomes a trusted member of Fafnir’s crew, contributing valuable knowledge and expertise to their adventures.

Zeno is an old creature with wrinkled skin, pale whiskers, and a humped posture. She takes Obligation seriously because of its biochemical significance, and she has a preference for long, bristle-like textures and comfortable fat paddles.

The story line is a combination of short adventures and major quest that intertwine to keep the reader involved in the immediate action but wondering how this feeds into the greater storyline.

Written by bestselling Author J.N. Chaney and Terry Maggert I am enjoying the series very much.

The books can be found on Amazon and are free on Kindle Unlimited.

Bright new “”Shiny Stuff” arrived!

The new “Shades of Calabria” deal arrived in the post yesterday.

In the past I have just purchased the new supplement and then later purchased the monsters required to play. This time I decided to pre-order the whole Wave 8 deal, and was not disappointed. The deal includes the book and has two new faction boxes and twenty-three monsters was well worth it. North Star service and postage at this time of the year was excellent.

I also picked up the second Austrian unit at the same time.

I think the order of painting outlined yesterday has already changed.

Game of Brethren 3 December 2024

Since ancient times, it has been the role of elders to shepherd the young through the awkward rites of passage, helping them qualify for the elite club of those who know all the secret handshakes. This sacred duty feels as heavy as Aunt Edna’s famous fruitcake—just waiting to topple! Through ceremonies filled with gestures that might confuse a toddler and teachings that shouldn’t be taken too seriously, these wise figures not only pass down rituals but also the juicy gossip of their ancestors. The young initiates teeter on the edge of adulthood, expected to embrace these pearls of wisdom like a cat embraces a box, beginning a journey that connects them to their family tree—branches and all—while preparing them for life’s ebbs and flows. In this way, the circle of wisdom keeps spinning, connecting the past and future, as each generation hilariously fumbles its role in the ongoing sitcom of their culture.

Two young adults, buzzing with curiosity but slightly freaked out, tiptoed into what felt like a high-stakes family outing led by the elder of one of them, who was apparently an expert in all things ancient and a bit quirky. While it was structured like a serious ritual with a side of history, I couldn’t shake the feeling it was more about keeping these kids entertained; the elder’s true mission appeared to be making sure they followed the family tradition like pro performers in a comedy show. The air was thick with nervous giggles and a sprinkle of “seriously, what is happening?”, as the duo shot each other looks, wondering if they’d stumble upon some life-changing wisdom or just get roped into a weird game of charades in this mysterious place.

With this serious ritual on our hands, we rolled out the red carpet for the confused newcomers, trying to make tradition seem cool and exciting. As the candlelight flickered like it was auditioning for a horror movie and ancient chants echoed like a karaoke night gone wrong, we stumbled through the steps, explaining the “oh-so-important” meanings behind each move. History felt like a heavy backpack on our shoulders, but we made sure to hand off our sacred knowledge, making sure they were just as baffled as those who came before them!

Seriously, it was a great pleasure to assist in turning these young ladies away from the darkness that is “Dungeons and Dragons” to proper gaming, where the focus is on collaboration, creativity, and engaging narratives that foster teamwork and friendship. By introducing them to diverse and wholesome alternatives, I witnessed not only their enthusiasm grow but also their skills in critical thinking and problem-solving develop, allowing them to experience the true joy of gaming in a positive environment that nurtures their imagination.

The game of “Brethren” was a wild Viking extravaganza, where sneaky Norsemen plotted their raid like a bunch of over-caffeinated koalas trying to snag the last gum leaf from the sacred trees of Eaglais na hÉireann (Irish) Kirk o Airlann. This ancient worship spot wasn’t just a sacred building; it was the neighborhood’s favorite selfie backdrop and a glue stick for community bonding. As the sun set, painting the sky in shades of drama, each player, representing their own quirky factions, felt the tension rise like a well-cooked pot of stew. The goal? Simple! Whoever could lay claim to that kirk by the end of the game would strut away with not just a pile of loot, but also bragging rights worthy of a Viking saga. Every move was like a game of chess in a room full of toddlers—strategic yet chaotic, as alliances changed faster than socks on laundry day, making every decision feel like a shot in the dark between conquest and a spectacular faceplant.

The Viking hordes amass outside the church, eager to gain the expected loot, their fierce faces lit by the pale light of dawn, resembling an overly enthusiastic bunch of kids waiting for a piñata to burst. They grip their weapons tightly—though some seem more interested in primping their beards than planning an actual raid—whispering excitedly about the treasures hidden inside, convinced it’s all gold and dragons. The wooden doors stand sturdy, but really, how long can they withstand a group of muscle-bound Norsemen who haven’t had their morning coffee? Inside, the unsuspecting Irish are blissfully unaware, likely debating who makes the best porridge, while outside, the tension builds like a pressure cooker, and the sound of clashing metal echoes, making one wonder if someone just dropped their cafeteria tray.

The Irish noble and his henchmen advance resolutely to defend the ancient church against those fish-smelling, dirty, dastardly Vikings, who threaten their sacred ground with their merciless and vicious ways. The Irish leader, already carrying the gruesome trophy of a severed Viking head held high to spur on his charges, rallies his men with fiery words, igniting their courage and determination. Each warrior, inspired by the sight of their noble commander, grips his weapon tightly, steeling himself for the ferocious clash that is sure to come, as the sun sets behind the hills, casting an ominous glow over the impending battle.

Irish bowmen tiptoe through a shady grove, trying to keep their footsteps quieter than a cat on a hot tin roof, as they hilariously prepare for a surprise attack on the invaders who are practically serving tea on their sacred soil. With exaggerated, theatrical breaths, they draw their bows, hands steadier than a kid in a candy store, each archer fully aware that their ancestors are probably shaking their heads in disbelief at their lack of stealth. The air is thick with tension and the unmistakable aroma of gum leaves, as the sunlight plays peek-a-boo through the branches, sprinkling the scene with a touch of drama and exposing their determined yet slightly goofy expressions. With a comical wink, they unleash their arrows, turning the peaceful woodland into a chaotic flurry of whistling sticks, ready to defend their homeland with a dose of unwavering courage mixed with a dash of absurdity.

Viking invaders, fueled by their grand dreams of conquest and perhaps a little too much mead, swagger in to trade arrows with the local Irish defenders, only to be hilariously taken down by the spot-on fire of the Irish archers, who are practically hidden among the trees like nature’s own version of a game of ‘Where’s Wally.’ These bow-wielding pros unleash volley after volley, turning the battlefield into a comedic display, showcasing not only their impressive skills but also their fierce determination to keep their homeland safe from these sword-swinging party gate-crashes.

A huge melee ensues within the walls of the sacred site. Blow after blow is exchanged, echoing against the ancient stones that have withstood countless cosmic fights between good and evil. The tension is palpable, as none give way; ferocity fuels the conflict, and determination glows in every combatant’s eyes. Altar and pew are scattered everywhere, their former sanctity desecrated by the chaotic fury of the struggle, as dust swirls and cries of anger reverberate in the air, painting a grim picture of chaos and desperation.

The Irish noble sights the invading leader from across the battlefield, his heart pounding with righteous fury. Without hesitation, he charges into battle, gripping his large axe tightly, the weight of his ancestors’ courage spurring him on. As he closes the distance, each step feels like an echo of history, a reminder of the countless warriors before him. With a fierce battle cry, he swings his axe with all his might, striking a huge blow that sends shockwaves through the air. In dramatic slow motion, the head of the Viking leader is severed from his body, falling to the ground as if time stands still. The sight ignites a roar of triumph among his fellow warriors, marking the battle won and ensuring that this victory will be remembered in the annals of history!

A bit OTT? You bet! But let me tell you, Wayne and I were on a mission to introduce these young ladies to the fabulous world of “war dollies,” and what a spectacle it was! We spent hours together, laughing so hard we almost rolled off our chairs, while navigating the battle scenario that felt more like slapstick comedy than strategic warfare, complete with die rolling that could put a circus act to shame and plans so hopeless they would make a wombat laugh. The sheer excitement in their eyes was infectious; I swear you could almost see their imagination doing cartwheels! It was like watching ourselves relive our own inauspicious beginnings in wargaming, where each plastic figure suddenly took on a life of its own, and every game turned into a legendary saga of ‘whoops’ and ‘uh-ohs!’

Snakes, Snakes and more snakes.

Australia’s snakes are well-adapted for self-defence, with around 170 species exhibiting unique traits. Some possess highly toxic venom that allows them to hunt larger prey and stay safe from threats. While many people fear them, snakes play a crucial role in controlling rodent populations. Understanding their behaviour and respecting their space can help reduce negative interactions with humans.

Australia, unfortunately, has the two most dangerous snakes in the world, the first is the Inland Taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus).

The second is the Eastern Brown snake (Pseudonaja textilis).

Most snakes prefer to slither away from humans instead of fighting because confronting larger creatures is risky. They don’t see humans as food since they mainly eat smaller animals. Snakes don’t bite for fun; when scared, they hide or blend in. Their venom helps them catch prey that is too hard to manage, allowing them to tackle surprisingly big animals. This process is essential for their survival and helps maintain balance in nature.

The most common snake, and certainly the one that I see most days is quite small, soft and likes to congregate in large dens of snakes in close confined areas. I am continually having to keep a close watch on my Grand-kids as they are fascinated by them.

One snake has 30 calories, and 5.7g of sugar. The Grand-kids would need to walk for approximately eight minutes to burn off that excess intake. This also ranks them as one of the most dangerous, although not venomous, snakes in the world!

However, more dangerous than any of these is a snake found in Egypt, and it is not the Cobra!

A packet of these for a few dollars made for a very cheap den of snakes for silver bayonet.

At about15cm (6 inches) I was hoping to coil them up so I didn’t need to cut them, but even with pinning and gluing they just wouldn’t stay in place.

I tried cutting them to make them smaller but the tapering meant they couldn’t be joined together without a lot of modelling, and to be frank I was just not interested in putting a lot of work into these.

In the end I just hacked them into the length I needed gave them a “quick and dirty” taper and they were ready to paint.

The Egyptian supplement for “Silver Bayonet” has three distinctive types of slithery monsters. A snake swarm, Uraeus – gigantic cobras which I have several of, and vipers the most deadly. These are going to used as the vipers and I intend to green stuff some swarms if I cannot find any on the net.

I shall just go slithering away to eat another 30 calories, and 5.7g of sugar!

I prefer the sweet and sour ones myself! Guru says “Life is to short to live small so if you are going to indulge, indulge big”!

Like this Cherry & Blue Raspberry Party Gummy Python which is the most over-the-top confection I’ve ever seen. This eight foot slab of serpentine sweetness is an amazingly detailed work of candy art, featuring coils of gummy goodness with lifelike scales, and intricate eyes that seem to stare back at you.

Irish Noble Warriors

Irish Gallóglaigh were elite Irish nobles and mercenaries from the Norse-Gaelic clans of Ireland and Scotland, dominating the battlefield from the mid-13th to late 16th centuries.

Known for their exceptional combat skills and fearsome reputation, they were heavily armored, often donning intricately crafted metalwork that offered both protection and intimidation.

These warriors fought valiantly with Danish axes, longswords, claymores, and sometimes spears or lances, showcasing their versatility in weaponry. Their unique blend of Norse and Gaelic heritage allowed them to adopt various tactics, making them highly sought after not only for their martial prowess but also for their strategic insights in warfare.

The Gallóglaigh played significant roles in numerous conflicts across the British Isles, as they navigated the turbulent political landscapes of the time, often aligning with local chieftains while pursuing their own interests.

Their legacy remains embedded in the history of Ireland and Scotland, symbolizing a time of fierce independence and martial excellence.

The famous ‘Sparth’ or Galloglaich axe, approximately 6ft long (various heads of several different styles and shapes have been found in Ireland), was by far the most common weapon.

There are also a few depictions of medium-length spears being used by Galloglaich though they were invariably armed with the Sparth as their trademark weapon.

More Irish still to come.

A question from Guru:

If the term “Aussie teetotaler” is an oxymoron, what about an “Irish noble “?
